Brief History of the City of Cumming GA | Bynum & Sons Plumbing, Inc.
Cumming is a city in Forsyth County, GA with a population of 6,284. It is seen as one of the best places to live in Georgia as it offers a solid suburban feel with many parks and excellent schools. It also has a great history which can be traced back to when the Cherokee once lived in the area.

Beginnings of the City

The area of Cumming, GA was inhabited by Cherokee tribes around 1755.

Around the same time, the Battle of Taliwa took place between the Cherokee and Creek people which started over a hunting dispute.

The battle lasted for two years and ended with the Cherokee winning the land and the Creek people moving south of the Chattahoochee River.

Not long after, white settlers came to the area and the Cherokee coexisted with them until 1828 when the settlers discovered gold in Georgia.

New settlers rushed to the area and insisted that the Cherokee get removed from the area, which resulted in the Treaty of New Echota in 1835, forcing the Cherokee Nation to move to the Indian Territory.

Cherokee County was later formed in 1831 and in 1832, the county was split into several counties, one of which was named Forsyth County.

Cumming was formed in 1833, which consisted of two 40-acre land lots. These lots were issued by the Georgia State Land Lottery in 1831 and bought by several Forsyth County Inferior Court justices.

A post office was established in 1834 and people were able to buy smaller lots over several years after the townland was divided into smaller areas by the Inferior Court.

Eventually, Cumming was incorporated into the City of Cumming and became the official government seat of Forsyth County. The city started to follow the mayor-council model of government from 1845 onwards.

Modern History

The gold mining industry that took place during the 1830s and 1840s was very beneficial to the city as it provided fertile ground for the development of many businesses. In 1849, however, the city fell into an economic depression because the California Gold Rush took place during that time. Newly built railroads also added to the city’s economic decline, as they ran near the city but bypassed it and therefore, stole traffic from Cumming’s main Federal Road. The Civil War, on the other hand, did not contribute to the city’s further decline and the city was spared from the fighting because William T. Sherman did not pass through Cumming during the March to the Sea. During the 20th century, Cumming saw great racial tension and intolerance, as well as one of the biggest civil rights demonstrations in 1987. In the period after that event, Cumming started to change, integrate, and experience new growth. Its population expanded and the city became a great and attractive place to visit with a lot to offer to the locals and tourists alike.

Conclusion

Cumming, which started as a small rural town, expanded a lot over the years.

Today, it is a commuter town for metropolitan Atlanta and acts as the economic base and center of trade for Forsyth County.

The city is famous for the Cumming Country Fair & Festival, which is held every October and varies lifestyle attractions, which makes Cumming a great place to live.
